Coupled hydrological-economic modelling for optimised irrigated cultivation in a semi-arid catchment of West Africa

چکیده
Abstract A coupled model system, consisting of a distributed hydrological model and an economic optimization model, is applied 1) to investigate regional interdependencies between irrigated agriculture and regional water balance and 2) to identify optimized cultivation strategies. The coupled model system is applied to a case study for the semi-arid Atankwidi catchment in West Africa. The hydrologic, physically based model WaSiM is used to simulate the water balance considering a fictive reservoir and a fictive irrigation system. The economic optimization of crop cultivation is perfromed by a nonlinear optimization model GAMS-ECIM which is coded in GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System). The GAMS-ECIM uses a nonlinear optimization solver to identify economically optimized cultivation strategies under certain hydrological conditions. The coupled model system is designed as decision-support tool for local authorities and agricultural stakeholders in the Ghanaian Upper East Region (UER). Model based distributed water balance monitoring of the White Volta catchment in West Africa through coupled meteorological-hydrological simulations
Sustainable water management requires the quantification of the spatial and temporal changes of water balance variables. Fully distributed hydrological simulations of these variables are especially in regions with weak infrastructure challenging, because the required meteorological input data are often not available in a sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. One possibility to deal with t...
متن کاملWhat happens after the catchment caught the storm ? Hydrological processes at the small , semi - arid Weatherley catchment , South - Africa
The knowledge of water flow pathways and residence times in a catchment are essential for predicting the hydrological response to a rain storm event. Different experimental techniques are available to study these processes, which are briefly reviewed in this paper. To illustrate this, recent findings from the Weatherley catchment a 1.5 km 2 semi-arid headwater in South-Africa, are reported in t...
متن کاملCatchment-scale spatial variability analysis of soil hydro-physical properties in a semi-arid region of Iran
Soil hydrau-physical data are important for many hydrological modelings. They are the main variables controllingthe key processes such as water and chemicals movement and transport in the soil profiles. This study was conductedin order to analyze the spatial distribution of selected soil hydrau-physcial characteristics including infiltration rate(IR), saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), bulk...
متن کاملWater Balance Modeling in a Semi-Arid Environment with Limited in situ Data Using Remote Sensing in Lake Manyara, East African Rift, Tanzania
The purpose of this paper is to estimate the water balance in a semi-arid environment with limited in situ data using a remote sensing approach. We focus on the Lake Manyara catchment, located within the East African Rift of northern Tanzania. We use a distributed conceptual hydrological model driven by remote sensing data to study the spatial and temporal variability of water balance parameter...
متن کاملAssessment of the important Factors on Gully Erosion in Arid and Semi-arid Region in Ilam Province
Infiltration is the process of water penetration from the ground surface into the soil and is an important process in the hydrological cycle by which surface runoff and groundwater recharge can be linked. Over the years, the importance of the infiltration process resulted in the development of several simplified analytical models for predicting infiltration. These infiltration models range from...
